Networking UK SEOs: introduce yourself…

Posted: November 12th, 2008 | Author: admin | Filed under: Networking / Social Media, SEO Help | Tags: Talk: 6 Comments »

I often think that the people who work in search marketing or more specifically search engine optimisation, often take the lead from USA SEO’s, which is no bad thing considering how many SEO heroes there are.  This is certainly not a bad thing, but there are great benefits of building a closer network of UK SEO’s…

Networking UK SEO’s

By developing online networks in the UK, consultants and specialists can develop and share more ideas and practices, of which I’m really wanting to push for the following reasons:

  • Sharing thoughts and resources on research into  UK search engine algorithms…
  • Meet at UK conferences or other search marketing events…
  • Share news, views and reviews of UK tools and websites…
  • Build networking opportunities for recruitment purposes, venture capital, joint ventures…

It’s not like I’m trying to carve a divide between the UK and USA (or other nations for that matter), but it makes a whole more sense for us to build a closer network of our own.

So UK SEOs , please introduce yourself

I realise there are some real top dogs in the UK SEO industry already who do already frequently meet and share a great deal online, but if you’re not quite yet a super-star SEO yet , then please feel free to introduce yourself…

I agree, the SEO network is very minimal compared to the US.

My name is Geoff, I am an SEO Developer in the South West of the UK (near Taunton). :)

    Hi Ben,

Couldn’t agree more with you on this point. I think that a couple of big events in the UK could really help us guys.

I’m currently based in Manchester and the number of events on there seems to be on the rise which is promising. I also think its important to point out the number of young and up and coming SEO’s in the sector.

    Hi Mark,

So pleased you agree! Got your details already – cheers for those! I’m based just outside of Manchester in Lymm, so must get more involved and meet more guys around the area.

I was offered a job a couple of years ago by MediaVest so nearly moved in to the agency life in Manchester but went in-house instead. Maybe next time?!

    Cheers Mark for stopping by,

    Ben

    Hi All,

I have accidentally stumbled upon this skill and am quite excited, I have finally found something which I enjoy doing and would like to turn into a career (just when I was giving up all hope!). Some advice on how to get into the industry would be great; are there SEO courses I should attend, how much experience do you need before someone will employ you, or should I try to go it alone? I would be really grateful for some help and I think a closer network in the UK would be great for beginners and pros; it’s not always what you know but who you know. A closer network would provide the ‘what’ and the ‘who’!

    Hi Jenni,

    Thanks for stopping by.

I’d personally suggest you get into a role where you can have some sort of mentor quite early on, so as to learn about best practice for 2009 at the earliest chance. It’s also a good idea to run your own sites as a sort of test-bed for SEO and social media activity. Working for yourself is an option but I’d make sure you get a chunk of experience first.

I think when you’re starting out, one of the most difficult things to work out is which SEO blogs are the most authoritative or reputable for the advice that they give….So if you’re looking for resources to learn from I’d dip into the sites that I’ve listed on the following couple of links:

I hope that helps Jenni. Any other questions let me know! :)
