The recent life and times of Ben McKay…
Posted: April 5th, 2009 | Author: Ben McKay | Filed under: Online Marketing Talk: 10 Comments »Well, I just thought I’d provide an overview of a few things that I’ve been up to lately as I’ve not been writing much to my site…so here goes…
Think Visibility Conference
Firstly (as I really should have written about this sooner) was the Think Visibility conference. This was about the best sort of SEO conference I could hope for. I am hoping to be attending more conferences this year, but I would not be surprised if this is the best of 2009. I loved the set-up; 100 attendees, 15 awesome speakers or so, and a great chance to speak to a whole host of people from the wide world of the web. Hello to all those that I met!
I hear that this was the first of a string of conference so make sure you head over to the site and register for updates.
Starting Work for Mediaedge:cia
The biggest update for you is my recent move to Mediaedge, part of GroupM / WPP – a cool company with plenty of cool projects to get involved in.
Exposure to the best working practices, technology, analytics, integrated media projects, and of course, people, has made this move a real exciting change over the last couple of months.
I should say (even though I have not been asked) is that all opinions written here are my personal opinions and not those of my employer! It’s obvious, but just wanted to emphasise that this is a personal space and not an extension of the Mediaedge website or company views.
SEO Scoop Author
Those nice guys at SEO Scoop kindly invited me along to write for their site. I like SEO Scoop – it’s kinda like a co-op of writers, and when there are so many views and overlapping fields of interest in internet marketing, it’s great to have multiple points of view. The other great thing is that if you don’t have much time to read about social media, SEO or PPC each day, then this could be a handy one-stop shop for all your needs, so add it to your feedreader today!
My first post for SEO Scoop was on my recent move to corporate SEO from SME SEO – it’s been a cool change and an interesting topic to write about so go and take a read.
My First SEO Tool
I’ve been toying with an idea to develop my first SEO tool to support my freelance SEO services since Christmas (it’s amazing the impact of a holiday on your clarity of thought), and have been researching the technology necessary to get it up and running for a while now. I think I’ve nailed the technology / coding that is necessary, but like with many things, the more challenges you resolve, the more that rear their not so pretty head…very excited about the prospect of developing it though, just wouldn’t mind a bit more time!!
Summer, at last!
The evenings are getting lighter and the Summer is rolling in at last! I hope the same is happening for you too…!

Congratulations on the move to Mediaedge! I see (Google Maps) that it’s not too far from where you live. You commute, I presume?
Thanks very much Ruud!
Yeah, it’s a comfortable hour each way – but a couple of podcasts helps the time fly by…and it’s worth it of course!
Thanks for stopping by.
@Ben: Congrats on the latest move to Mediaedge, I liked the disclaimer
Would love to see the SEO tool you are working on. Summers are not much fun at my place, I wait for winters.
@Jeet – thanks very much!
Really hoping to get the tool up and running by the end of the summer…but would love a week on it now!!
Cheers Jeet for stopping by.
Ben
Hi Ben
Congrats on the new role, fancy moving again maybe to a role with less of a commute?
If not do you know anyone that might be looking for work, I have a couple of SEO Manager opportunities.
If you have any PPC friends I can help them too.
Thanks
Kate
You’re a persistent one aren’t you! Will be in touch if anything changes.
Thanks for getting in touch!
Ben
Hey Ben, I think I met you briefly when you couldn’t find your way back to the conference on the first floor of the casino. We ended up walking into a poker tournament by mistake…
How did you find the conference?
Yeah that tournament looked fun actually – we should have stayed!!
Enjoyed the conference though – should really do a write-up about it really…will drop you an email later!
Cheers for stopping by
Seems like you’re doing so well now.Have seen your site some time ago and now I see the real difference.Congrats on getting a new job by the way!
Thanks Mike – I really should do a follow-up to this piece…so much has happened since then, but thanks anyway!
